Stone Tiles
Stone tiled roofs in diminishing courses look beautiful and as you would expect are incredibly hard wearing. We have used a variety of new stone tiles including York, Cotswold, and Indian; although for a truly authentic Herefordshire stone tiled roof we source them from a local stone quarry. An advantage of ‘new’ stone tiles is that they can be ordered to size and specification. Second Hand stone tiles by their very nature could already have given one hundred plus years of protection against the elements, and this unique heritage has its own special appeal. Sourcing the sizes and quantities is the key in these instances, and we have the experience and contacts to do this. |
Slates
Slates make a striking visual impact on a roof through their colours and textures. Although occasionally random or in diminishing courses, more often they offer a uniformity to the roof. Again, second hand slates are available as they are removed from old roofs when the roof timbers fail. These can be sourced to match in with an existing slated roof or on an extension to complement the main roof. Welsh slates are used extensively in Herefordshire and we love working with them; they are traditional and sympathetic to their surroundings and their quality and durability means they are sought after for heritage and prestigious projects. Westmorland Green slates are another favourite, and cheaper alternatives are Brazilian, Canadian, Spanish and even Chinese slates. |
Shingling
Shingles are a waterproof wooden tile. Oak Shingles, the most traditional, are individually hand cleft and have a natural durability due to their high tannin content. More recently, sawn cedar has been used which is also naturally durable, although will not last as long as Oak in the UK climate. Shingling is a very old craft and we are proud to be able to offer this service. |
