Re-roofing an old
property is harder work than a brand new roof but much more satisfying.
Our first job when re-roofing is stripping off the old covering, whilst
keeping it waterproof to protect the contents below, and sorting the
slates or tiles to see which can be reused. We inspect the roof to see
what underlying repairs need to be done to the timbers, brick work and
chimney. We then clean out all the debris from the roof, draw out the
old nails and complete any identified repairs. Next we insulate and put
on any new Facia or barge boards needed.
_After this we work out how the saved slates or tiles can be reincorporated back into the roof. Depending how many have been reclaimed, they may be mixed in with the new covering or used for one whole side of the roof. The skill in re-roofing an old property is respecting the character of the roof and not losing the traditional shape that has moulded to the property over time. This means working with the bowed roof timbers, finding just the right slate or tile to sit specifically in that location so that it is flush, looks good and is not sticking out – which a flat slate might naturally do. This is difficult and time consuming, but it is this dedication to detail that makes a beautifully crafted roof.
