Chimneys can be a problem in today’s world as many of them are not used for their original purpose. In times past they would have been kept warm and dry through the fire below, but when unused they act like a big sail in the air catching the weather, soaking up the water and letting it in. Our work in this area is problem solving through a process of elimination. Common problems relate to weathered brickwork and pointing, lead work or flaunching (the mortar on the top of the chimney stack). Once we have determined the issue there will be a number of options such as putting a lead tray in the brick work to turn the water away, sealing the chimney or re-pointing the brickwork.
